AL-KAFI #56: JAMAK AND QASAR WHEN ONE IS TRAVELLING BACK TO HIS HOMETOWN

 AlKafi 56 compressed

Question:

Assalamualaikum wrm.wbt.,

Is it permissible for me to perform jamak and qasar when I go back to my hometown of which the distance is approximately 100 km between my house and my hometown?

Answer:

Waalaikumussalam wrm. wbt.

Alhamdulillah, praise and thanks to Allah for the countless blessings He has blessed us all with. Blessings and salutations to the Prophet Muhammad PBUH, his wives, his family, companions and all those that follow his teachings to the day of judgement.

If we still consider our hometown as our house, then it is impermissible. If we consider it as us just visiting our parents while we already have our own home in the city, then it is permissible. Regarding the distance of the travel, it is a khilaf (scholars have differing opinions on the matter) among scholars. The reason is the distance is just an approximation (taqribi) and not tahdidi (accurate measuring unit). Hence, there are opinions that state it is 81 km, 89 km, 90 km, 91 km and others.
